SC:
Thanks for the interview Marti. Can you please give us a description of yourself?
MBT: Hi and you are most welcome. I actually wear several hats! I’m a very driven, self-motivated Texan! I’ve been in Canada for almost 3 years. Still getting used to the climate in Edmonton! I have had several businesses of my own, mainly in the personal training industry and Pilates. I have been teaching Pilates for 15 years and am currently going through training to bring a teacher training system into Canada from the States. I have been moving and exercising since I hit the ground! Since I was very young I have competed in sports ranging from cross country, track, dance, swimming, triathlon, half marathons, 10Ks – you name it. I’m a mover!
SC:
Congratulations on winning your IDFA Pro Card at the 2008 IDFA Western Canada Classic!
MBT: Thank you! You really put on a great show for those of us who prefer to be natural athletes.
SC:
How long have you been weight training and/or involved in fitness?
MBT: I began lifting weights during my cross country practice in South Texas – I was 15. I loved it, and kept on going. I don’t think I have missed more than 4 or 5 days since then. That was 32 years ago!
SC:
Tell us about how you became interested in competing in Figure?
MBT: I was a Pro Bodybuilder in the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation, and decided that I would never grow much above 105, so I wanted to give it a shot. It so feminine and really suits a diva like me. I love to get dressed up, and I love to be on the stage. I’m a big ham.
SC:
What motivates you on those tough days during contest prep?
MBT: You know, that is a great question. I have always visualized to prepare for anything in order to be successful, so I use my mind to keep me going. I like to compete with myself, to drive myself to be the best that I can be. I also like to think about a great glass of Zinfandel (red of course), and perhaps some wine gums.
SC:
How long have you been competing?
MBT: I’ve been competing for 18 years now, since I was 30.
SC:
What have you learned from competing?
MBT: My career in competition has gone from one end of the spectrum to the other. When I first began, I wanted to achieve this ideal l had in my mind. At that point it was just something to try. After awhile, I saw it as an ego thing. Then that disappeared. After that it became a way to motivate other women who did not believe in themselves. So many of us grow up to have a low opinion of ourselves. I have learned that I am very strong, I can depend on myself, and that I can have whatever it is that I desire. I surround myself with positive, like-minded people. Now, it has become a great way to stay in shape, and allows me to be onstage which I love!
SC:
Do you have any tips or advice for upcoming figure competitors?
MBT: Find a great mentor, believe in God or your higher power, whatever that is. Trust the process, because it certainly is a process. Remember that you never get there till you get there. It all comes together at the last minute. I usually have one freak out, a month before the show. Remember, you are peaking for one day on the stage, not before! Learn your body and how to pose!
SC:
Do you train on your own or do you have a training partner?
MBT: I train alone, but could not make it without my nutritionist, Dr. Joe Klemczewski. With his advice and expert eyes, he has coached me and prepared my diet for the past 6 years. He is a fabulous man to have on your side. I highly recommend him to anyone who is serious about competition. He will get you to your goals!
SC:
What about supplements? What are your favourites?
MBT: I use Bioxx protein powders, and L-Glutamine 3 times per day.
SC:
Any big shows coming up? Any plans on competing in the upcoming IDFA Pro Shows?
MBT: My plan is to compete in Toronto in July for my first pro show in Figure.
SC:
Any parting words?
MBT: Have fun or go home!!
SC:
